I'm sad to move this to my 'tried to read' shelf but it seems as if me and Salman Rushdie are fated to stick to short stories. I love the beginnings of all of his books but lose interest about halfway through.

Amazing. Whimsical in all the right ways.

I gave up half way through. In other books I have loved Rushdie's magical realism, but in this one I just couldn't settle into the story. The writing, however, is as beautiful as ever.

Extraordinary. Just extraordinary. Take the historical settings of Renaissance Florence and the court of the Grand Mughal Emperor Akbar, a good number of historical persons, and tie them together by an extraordinary flight of imagination. Spellbinding. Not all of Rushdie's novels have managed to grip me, but this one was enchanting.

As I haven't read any of Rushdie's other works I have nothing to compare "The Enchantress of Florence" to. I can say that I found it to be beautifully written and completely captivating. The story of the yellow haired traveler didn't interest me at first, but they way Rushdie wove the story of the Traveler and the Forgotten Princess together was very fluid and quickly drew me in. I will be picking up more of Rushdie's work in the future as this has just wet my appetite.

My first Rushdie- lyrical, and so evocative of a magical period and place. It reminded me of Italo Calvino's Invisible Cites in both content and tone.
