Re-reading this was an exercise in patience, but it still remains a classic YA/middle grade novel for a reason. Meg is a unique protagonist for the time: moody, unconfident, and unspecial. I think the story would be stronger if more time was devoted to depicting her "regular" life before the adventure begins, so you can feel a bit more empathetic towards her outbursts and anxieties. Some of the adventure chapters slow to a crawl with dialogue that could be edited a bit.

I think that L'Engle had some interesting ideas, and I can appreciate that, but in my opinion the execution was very poor. The way the morals of the story were conveyed didn't work at all for me. That being said, I am able to understand why other enjoy this book. It's just that I did not enjoy it at all.

There’s a lot to this, and while it reads comfortably as a kids book, I see how it’s lived on.

Book club: mid-5/6
Explore descriptive language (especially of setting) and character design (power of character flaws)
Themes around love, acceptance and valuing difference
Big questions around time travel/physics, and the ethics of utopia (equal doesn’t mean alike)

Too christian for me. Basically thinly vailed cold war propaganda about good christian kids going on a scientific outer space adventure to fight evil communism. Writing is good but damn. Would not recommend reading it for the first time as an adult.
