This book is amazing!

I think it's massively important to acknowledge the intersectionality of queer identities and autism. It's a demographic not widely spoken about, or heavily misunderstood and even demonised. I felt that Laura hit all the right notes when speaking on how transgender people with autism are treated in society. Even though this book is now a few years old, it's very applicable to current issues still, which only shows we still have issues to tackle.

As a autistic transgender man I found this book highly relatable, it also gave me lots of hope despite some of the negative themes in it.

It's a very accessible read, with easy to understand language and easy font.

This isn't the first book I've read by Laura Dale Kate, having first read Gender Euphoria, which meant when I saw this book on the library bookshelf I knew I was in for a great read. She is a fantastic writer and if I ever find another one of her books I'd happily pick it up in a heartbeat.

In this fantastic memoir, Laura Kate Dale explains what it is like to grow up as a queer, autistic, trans woman. It's now well recognised that neurodiversity and gender diversity have a large overlap, so it's really exciting to see an #ownvoices book published which acknowledges this intersection. As an autistic woman, I could definitely relate to Laura's struggles with sensory processing and social situations as well as her journey of self-discovery, and despite having done a lot of research about autism, there were things I learned or realised about myself from reading this book. I liked the informal, candid tone of her writing, which conveyed her personality and sense of humour. Obviously this book will attract people who are autistic, queer, and/or trans, but it's also an important and insightful read for a neurotypical, straight and cis audience as well.

i think it made me more hopeful for my adult life as an autistic person who is queer and just turned 18. I can have rich social life, and I can not overcome the difficulties with autism but work with them. It was nice to see another autistic queer person have a rich social life, and be queer and happy. They have a fiance and hobbies. I want to be like that

I decided with these memoir style books, I am not going to give them a rating as it’s not for me to decide how many stars someone’s life is worth!!

Uncomfortable labels was informative, honest, emotional but at times also lighthearted. Although it spoke about low points (usually related to a lack of respect/support) and had frustrating and heartbreaking moments there was also many positive and heartwarming things discussed. It’s a memoir at its core but it’s also very matter of fact and brimming with information. I absolutely felt like I walked away from this better informed on various topics and as a parent, it also had me reflect on my approach and highlighted some things I may want to work on.

I think this book is worthwhile reading. Whilst it’s only one persons experience, the more people we listen to, the more we can learn.
