This is a hard one to rate, because I know this is Hashem's debut. The story and the premise was there and I really enjoyed the characters. I did feel like all characters accept for the MC fell a little flat as you were told more about them than experienced. I needed a little bit more from them.

The world was really interesting, and Im excited to read more from it. Hasham kinda just threw all this terminology at the reader and expected us to learn what it meant on our own. I had a lot of trouble with it. There are words and titles I still don't fully understand (Ive read adult high fantasy and haven't had a large issue with terminology in the past).

I also felt like there were some key moments that were skipped over, that led me to be like "what just happened". Also a few moments that were slightly unbelievable.

All that aside, I think the next book in the series will be better. I am excited for the MC's character arc.

This could be the start of a whole series and I wouldn't even be mad about it. But since we are only getting a duology I'll make due.

The world building was top tier, the characters were fleshed out and fully realized. The romance was there but it did not dominate the story. This has to be the truest enemies-to-lovers I've read in a very long time. And the writing style? *Chefs kiss*

I was not overly fond of the underdeveloped magic system or the weird trials. The actual trials took place over the last 150-200 pages or so, and a lot of Very Important Things happened during those pages, but.... I dunno, it just didn't do it for me.
