I found this book fascinating and I read it in a couple of hours. It concerns the author's tween years, spent in Iran around the time of the Islamic Revolution. Some parts were very disturbing. I plan on reading the sequel as soon as I can.

I will always love graphic novels, but this has to be one of the best out there, easily.
Mariane Satrapi made me laugh, cry, fear, love, and most importantly, learn. The panels are striking and the story is emotional while still being incredibly informative. I feel so lucky that this was assigned reading, but I hope to think that I would’ve eventually picked this up on my own.
I truly believe everybody should read this. It’s not long, it’s not difficult to read, and it’s so informative.
I will be seeking out Part 2 very soon.

Eso estuvo hermoso, nunca me había interesado ni emocionado tanto por una biografía

recently reread this and it’s still one of my favorites. and now i’m back to wanting to read some comics. i love how they told such a painful story through expressive simple drawings.

i didn't think it could happen, but this book made me come around on comics. the drawings are simple, black and white, but it's amazing how much emotion is expressed in them. it's a first hand account of life in iran, and it's not heavy handed or overly analytical.
i also highly recommend embroideries, also by satrapi. AND persepolis the movie, which opens later this month. :)
