I truly love reading fucked up horror books. This would have been even better if there weren't random "written by a man" comments and casual fatphobia, as well as if the plague aspect was explored a bit more, but it still creeped me out multiple times and I found the way the plot twisted and progressed very cleverly built. I predicted a few things but some others came as a total surprise.

The Deep 4.5/5
A supremely creepy fever dream of a book. The one criticism I have is that it could have played with the fear of the deep ocean more, as the horrific scenes felt disconnected from its setting at times. But wow, I couldn’t look away. I had my hand over my mouth for most of the book, and it made me cry at one point. The descriptions of things in the dark and body horror are truly, truly horrifying. I’ll be sleeping with the lights on from now on, and God knows I’m not going into a submarine any time soon!

the majority of the book was really good (if not weird, especially when the author referred to the hole caused by the  ambrosia as things like ‘the hungry hungry hole,’ [why?]), but the ending was really disappointing. it just felt like the author didn’t know where to go with it, maybe.

then again,
the book is definitely a “we’re all in hell, bear witness to my guilt and allow me to make a deal with the devil” trope, so maybe that was the only way it could go.

the troop has stayed in my head since i read it, and so i had high expectations of the deep. tim bought me this book for valentine’s day 🖤, knowing how much the troop messed with me. this book also messed with me, the descriptive way nick cutter writes is so disgusting at times and yet i devoured this book!

the claustrophobia of a deep sea station and the unbalanced minds of the scientists working within was unsettling, the sounds and the experiments added to the atmosphere. there was a few times i had to put the book down, crank open a window and get some fresh air. books that make me physically queasy are a firm fav - the power an author has to elicit a response like that is so 🤌🏽

unfortunately the ending really confused me. it felt like that movie “the house that jack built” where it was interesting and intense and then the ending devolved into some weird hellish acid trip that left me far behind.

I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this. I really like the concept (we need more under water horror books!) but I don’t think it was executed very well. Perhaps I’m simply a hater to my core, but it was a let down at the reveal.
