The aesthetic and writing style of the novel are quite fitting and hauntingly beautiful. I also thought the concept of lying was really interesting because now having finished the book I''m left unsure of several narrative details. I know they were liars but which were the lies?! The reason I haven't rated this book higher is because the characters aren't lovable. The adults are all the yucky parts of American capitalism, elitism, privilege etc. (I'm aware that's the point). And the children don't give us anything to root for. The main romance in the novel
, between Cadence(Cady) and Gat,
comes too quickly and dwindles for the rest of the book. It becomes an awkward after thought rather than a place for romantic tension to build.

Damn this book. A very different writing style for me but I don’t hate it and I truly did like the characters and the plot for the book despite it being disturbing for me.

i would’ve liked it more if it wasn’t for the insufferable hype surrounding this book. i felt like in my entire experience i was waiting for the plot twist, looking between every sentence to see if i could find foreshadowing. still, even without the hype, i felt the writing to be corny and juvenile sometimes. not juvenile in an immature way, but in the way where i could tell the writer was trying to be “deep” and sound mysterious and professional. the characters were the strength of this book. the relationship between gat and cadence was the only thing really pulling me back to it. i didn’t find the plot twist to shock me as much as i was hoping. i did not throw my book across the room. i see the appeal and i can understand why some people adore it so much. everyone gets shocked to varying degrees and although i wasn’t extremely surprised i see that some people could find the twist more unpredictable.

This book is hyped up so much everywhere and I didn't like it at all. The writing style is so over the top (every time the main character meets even a minor setback she's like "then he turned into a bear and shot me in the face"), the characters have one trait each, and the way the author can't seem to decide whether these characters’ obscene wealth is embarrassing or aspirational and kind of tries to do both drove me nuts. (The dismissive comments in the afterward about Cady’s "marxism" do suggest a few things though...)

I thought this was a thriller from the blurb but nothing happens and the twist is beyond stupid. (Also I have no idea how the character got out of the situation revealed in the twist without any injuries that would be noticeable months later even if she did have amnesia.) I don't think this book had any redeeming qualities.
