This was a fun read but I think it made it clear that Grann's strength is in narratives - the draw of his other books ( Killers of the Flower Moon, The Lost City of Z ) is his ability to paint a picture and lead readers through the story. This strength just isn't the same in shorter-form writings.

While I enjoyed the stories in this book, it felt disjointed - they were somewhat grouped by theme, but some felt out of place. I'm not sure where the story of the pipes under New York fit. I guess it's obsession, but it doesn't feel as though it's in the same vein as the other stories. All the other stories had some air of mystery to them, while that one did not.

I think some context to the writing would have helped. All of the stories were written at different points in time. Why those stories then?
