The message in this powerful poem is brilliantly illustrated by Jess X Snow.
I connected to parts of this as a woman, and had my eyes open to challenges unique to black women.

Black Girl Magic is fierce and defiant, a catalog of the ugliness of misogynoir and structural racism and a celebration of Black girls and women. Would be marvelous for teens, and likely an excellent fit for older elementary/middle school girls as well, as they've definitely heard the uglier messages and could use the reminder of their magic, but it's a wonderful poem for adults, too.

Black Girl Magic is a beautiful poem, filled with real-world problems, real-world confidence, and a whole lot of charm (magical pun intended). You are magic, and you are beautiful, and you can be what you want to be and do what you want to do--no matter what anyone tells you. The illustrations are gorgeous and complement the poem perfectly.
I definitely recommend this for all ages. Confidence and self-love can never start too young. This is a great addition to any library-- public, school, or personal.

With a dedication stating “This book is for you,” this spirited poem of strength and finding beauty in yourself despite what the world expects of you lifts up black women, acknowledging their accomplishments and struggles, and gives young black girls an anthem of support. The text is accompanied by striking black, white, and red illustrations that amplify the empowering message of the poem.
