i am at a loss for words. this book provides the grotesque and raw narration of what it means to be a woman. it did trigger me at times but i enjoyed it alot.

haunting, graphic, and so important. I don’t care what people say, I think this was an incredibly brave thing for Ernaux to publish at the height of her literary career and gives voice to many with similar experiences.

Really great knowing that my country has decided that abortions are no longer okay 🙃.  just such a comforting feeling, isn’t it??? I hope pro-life people understand that outlawing abortion doesn’t make it less common, it just makes it incredibly dangerous.

Part memoir, part social commentary, covering both the misogyny and classism of 1960s France, this is an incredibly powerful book about the author's experience of abortion in her early twenties. Ernaux repeatedly plunges you into her novelistic style of storytelling, only to pull you out again to remind you that she's writing this from memory four decades later. Seeing her experiences from both the perspective of her young self as it happened, and also with hindsight telling us what stayed with her and affected her later life, makes the book all the more compelling.
