My partner got me this book just after I had my abortion since he is doing a French degree and I love the rawness of translated fiction. Ernaux does not just capture the emotional pain of abortion access, but she paints a picture of the physical pain that comes with it. It’s an insightful read from a historical perspective on the struggles of abortion access over the past few decades, a vital read for those who have never accessed abortion and a source of reflection for those who have. I have a feeling I will be coming back to this again.

Un livre bouleversant, surtout face a ce cauchemar actuel aux Etas-Unis ou des millions de personnes n'ont plus le droit se faire avorter comme l'auteur en France en 1963.

An emotionally taxing but extremely timely memoir; there is something particularly devastating about realizing it was written in 1999, when the era of illegal abortion seemed so far removed, and having it feel so relevant today.
