I liked it. I found the world-building and concept to be very interesting and engaging. Its a bit hard to stick with as there are quite a few large chunks of scientific exposition. It was like multiple novels in one: A bit of alien world-building, an fundamental/environmental activist story, plus a good amount of Ready Player One-type MMO intrigue.

I haven't decided if I'll read the rest of the trilogy.

This is one of those books where you have no idea what you're reading until it all starts to make sense and it blows you're mind in the process.

It's a pretty good start to a series, and can't wait to see what's going to happen next

the writing is lovely and intruiging but it’s too sciencey for me to give it five stars.

i know it’s science fiction but i’m a books-about-books kinda gal and i don’t love science fiction in general.
i do not understand or wish to understand physics and therefore i had to ask my boyfriend five million questions regarding basic physics to even begin to understand a lot of the book.

that all being said it is an extremely good book overall and i definitely recommend it. especially for people who like science fiction!

(i deeply disagree with the afterword re: the part about the best stories in the world being in equations/math/science but again i’m a humanities gal through and through so obviously i disagree with that and i tried not to take that into consideration while rating the book itself)

The science was amazing. The speculative science was even more amazing. This was a great book if you want to read something that just makes your brain break a little. (In a good way. The same way it breaks when you study the double slit experiment and try to understand them.) The characters were fleshed out and I thought it was well written.

That said, the premise is a bit confusing and there were a lot of things that felt unneeded or unexplained. I also found myself looking at the "x minutes left in chapter" and just having to power through it. It didn't engage me fully for some reason.

If you really like deep science speculative sci-fi, read it. If nothing else, it got me thinking and I liked that.
