The best part of this book is the commentary by the worms. Gert loves to eat dirt which impresses the worms. I think the rhymes they use are fun. I think the best part of the story was when Gert was photosynthesized.

This is a simple, silly story, but it is tons of fun and it brought a smile to my face. I can’t say I have eaten dirt plain, but I do buy into the adage “you have to eat a pound of dirt before you die.” This goes a bit farther than that. I never would have guessed how fun this book was. It brought me lots of joy.

The niece gave it 3 stars because it was funny and pretty weird. The niece is the one who picked this out to read. I enjoyed it much more than she did I think. The nephew thought the worms were hilarious. He loved the girl eating dirt. This was his kind of story. He gave this 5 stars. I’m close to giving it 5 stars I enjoyed it so much and it might change.

Definitely one to read with the kids, as opposed to them reading it themselves, as some of the vocabulary is a bit advanced and will need explaining. But the story is adorable. I love how the parents just let the little girl be who she is. Also, I love books that break gender stereotypes and show little girls getting dirty or playing rough.

For early elementary. I'm astonished he found so many words with "ize" endings! The ending of the story, however, seemed too abrupt. I guess I'm glad they didn't try and turn her into a "civilized" girl, but it still seemed to lack something.

A story about a girl who likes to eat dirt. Seems like there is a hidden agenda and some words would be hard for littler ones to understand but the story and writing is geared toward the little kids. Not sure how to recommend this book.

I don't know if I liked the story but the opening "Little Gert loved eating dirt. The worms all idolized her" made me lol pretty sincerely. I just pictured that as the opening voice over of an Investigation Discovery documentary about Gert's disappearance.
