Hmmmm... not sure about this one. Feels like Fujimoto maybe went a little too over the top with the darkness. Kind of like The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Definitely check the CWs if you're gonna read this.

This story feels very compelling. I completely love it, so hard to put down.  There were a few incestuous implications and other strange sexual references that were a little uncomfortable.. but easy to overlook and keep reading. I still really love the story. Can’t wait to get Vol. 2

I am reading this to gain more context on the author and any influence there may be on Chainsawman.

I think some of my enjoyment of this came from having read csm before. This is a lot darker than CSM. Kind of has some vibes of Snowpiercer, mostly just because of the dystopian snowy world. Also feels a little bit like the edgy parts of early Berserk. Also some of the bad cliches of manga. I am hoping the edginess wears off in later volumes because some panels in this book were very uncomfy to read. Thematically may have been appropriate though so I could get through it.

If you are interested in something between Snow Piercer, Berserk, and Chainsaw man this manga may be worth checking out.

I found it intriguing enough I’ll probably read the rest.

I’ve had several conversations with fellow creatives about the futility of pursuing originality in art because a truly original work will also be alienating and incomprehensible. To those that don’t believe me, I kinda wanna give them this and works like this, because Fire Punch is unhinged and makes me scream, “wtf?” throughout and yet fits its absurd content, the world and the characters within it, into a familiar framework.

The first volume is an origin story and revenge arc with a side slice of lone wolf and cub. And if the structure hadn’t been familiar and visible, the volume might have been too obtuse to entertain. It’s weird, and that’s the draw, but also a deterrent since the weirdness applies to breaking taboo as well.

Delivered at a breakneck speed is explicit violence, cannibalism, incestuous relationships, attempted sexual assault of adults and minors, and reference to bestiality.
