This is the best book I've read this year.  Beautiful written, with almost every other page containing a sentence that surprised me and made me laugh.  A little experimental in places (some chapters are poems, one is a giant footnote) but some wonderful descriptions of both how places change over time and how different (but also similar) people can be over the space of a couple of centuries.
