I loved the web series this book is based on, but the book just doesn't to it justice. You're better off sticking to the web series

Kim Turrisi has captured the story and Laura’s voice perfectly, her geekiness and nerdy references are perfectly appropriate and flow throughout the first person perspective. The characters from the series are written perfectly in character and pay true homage to the original actors’ performances. This would be perfect for fans of the Carmilla web series and film, but it is also a nice read for fans of vampire stories and has great LGBTQ representation with diverse characters.

Thanks to NetGalley for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When I saw that Carmilla was getting a novelisation, I was beyond excited to read and review it. I had expected something that the book did not manage to give unfortunately.
This review doesn't reflect my view on the series, as I loved and followed the series. This is an adaptation of the webseries Carmilla, which is itself based on a 19th century novel. The series succeeded because of its original vlog style format, with Laura telling the story of her university roommate Carmilla and the eventual reveal of her being a vampire and their relationship following that. This novelisation however fell short of what I expected. As a fan of the series,
I felt the first person perspective of Laura was written with the simplicity of the dorm room setting unable to come across as well thought out and well used as it is in the show. Laura is a character who Elise Bauman (of the webseries) portrays as complex something which the level of writing this book had didn't manage to develop upon, which is a missed opportunity. Due to it being an adaptation, I expected more to be built upon as it had more room to do so that the five minute episodes of the webseries couldn't. This chance was missed and this meant that I was unable to enjoy the novel as much as I hoped to.
For anyone unaware of the series, I was wholly recommend a watch if the idea of this novel interested you, as the show is exciting and Natasha Negovanlis as Carmilla is a PERFECT casting. :)

So bad, writing got worse as the book went on. I mean at least it had a plot but the characters were INCREDIBLY stupid, especially the main character, & the enemies-to-lovers was kinda sudden. Even sapphic vampires didnt make me like this

I was looking forward to a sapphic vampire story. This however was a disappointment. I’m 37 pages in and the writing is incredibly juvenile and irritating. It reads like an incredibly bad TV show.

Honestly the most upsetting books are the ones that could have been good.

Really was more of a 2.5.
I had some kind of high hopes for this book and I am sad to be let down. The story did go along with the web series, but the writing just was not up to par. It felt like reading a fanfiction of the series, not reading the companion.
