Title: Aquarius (Murders of the Zodiac)
Author: A. P. Morgan
Genre: Crime/Thriller
Rating: *****
Review: The opening to Aquarius introduces us to Leslie Boxe, who is a new detective working her first homicide of a young girl named Susan whose birthday happened to mean she fell under the star sign Aquarius and this might be the Zodiac theme. As she assesses the scene of the crime, we see that Leslie is a little like Susan in the fact she works hard and has very little downtime but wants to get into dating. It is clear from the outset that Leslie despite being a rookie is good at her job, however, I was intrigued by the fact that we are getting the killer's perspective as well as Leslie's.
As we approach the ¼ mark in the novel, a second body turns up with the same M.O. And Leslie makes a link between the cases, but it seems that one of the shy girls might have been into things a lot darker that might have led her to cross paths with the killer. I really liked the dynamic between Joe and Leslie as they have a mentor/student relationship and he is always offering her advice or insight into their case. I also have a bad feeling about the guy Leslie has met on a dating site and we know the killer uses technology for surveillance and isn't shy about killing the open, in broad daylight.
As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel, Leslie is using all of her knowledge and skill as a detective to try and uncover clues to the killer's identity but there isn't much to work with. However, when she meets Ryan another detective who has been contacted numerous times by a girl with some psychic abilities, she begins to think that the star sign connection might run a little deeper and that might be how the killer is choosing his victims. However, her relationship with Jerome is also picking up and I have feeling that one of these men might be the killer.
As we approach the halfway mark in the novel, the body count is now up to eight people and the killer shows no signs of stopping and the police are no closer to catching him. However, the final victim was found still alive despite dying in hospital and her husband might hold some clue to the killer's identity as they walked right by each other. It seems Leslie is closing in on a possible suspect, but I am not convinced he may be an ass, dangerous and have a disregard for the rules but he doesn't strike me as a cold and callous killer and if he was id expect him to be the type to stick around Ann's watch his victims for rather than leaving it to fate.
As we cross into the second half of the novel, we see that Leslie is working on her relationship with Jerome but the demands of her job often get in the way but that doesn’t stop them especially since they have been taking things slow. We also know that Leslie has made more connections between the women and the star sign they all share, and these little facts are very interesting, and I can’t wait to see how this novel ends.
As we approach the ¾ mark in the novel, small pieces of the mystery seem to be coming together but I have the feeling that the killer’s identity might not be revealed until the end of the series. I really liked the character dynamics especially between Leslie and Ryan as she comes clean that she is attracted to Ryan and would rather be with him and he understands the job being an officer himself, but he is obviously taken as he in engaged and Leslie doesn’t want to settle for second best although she is still obviously attracted to Jerome.
As we cross into the final section of the novel, the pieces of the puzzle seemingly falls into place when the killer’s identity is revealed but I have a feeling that something isn’t quite right, and the synopsis of Pisces supposes my theory and I can’t wait to up into the second novel in this series. Highly recommended!
