I did not expect to like this book, in fact, I expected to hate it. Quite frankly, the only reason why I read it was to see what all the hype was about. I already knew the whole story, including the ending and top it all off, I do not like reading romance books at all. I know that The Fault in Our Stars isn't all romance, but a good portion of the book is about that. So to sum all of this up, I had very low expectations. I did end up thoroughly enjoying this book, but not for all the reasons you might think. While I loved the characters and thought that the plot was interesting, those weren't the reasons that the book was good. To me, there are two things about The Fault in Our Stars that make it worth reading. The first is John Green's writing. I'm not sure what I enjoyed so much about the way that he told the story, but I was just really liked his writing style (I have not been able to read any of his other books yet, but I would definitely like to). The other thing that makes this book worth your time is that there are certain quotes and portions of the book that make you (or at least made me) think quite a bit. There were little quotes inserted into the story that, when you think about them more, are incredibly truthful. Some of my favorites were: "the marks humans leave are too often scars", "you don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have a say in who hurts you", and "the world is not a wish-granting factory". I found these quotes to be very interesting as well as generally applicable to my life. Overall, I did really enjoy this book and I hope that this review has helped you!

While I can't say I fell in love with this book the way others have, I can say this book was somewhat thought provoking, and that is where the value lies. I don't believe anyone truly "knows" whether or not there is something more after this life, but I get wanting to make a mark. I thought it was funny what Gus said in his letter about wanting to make a mark and piss all over the place like a dog pissing on fire hydrants. I can relate with wanting to make a mark in some way or another. I don't have a life threatening disease, but I have people close to me who do. I also have a hard time with this thought that it may be possible that this life is it, it's the one shot you have to enjoy your life or do something with it. This book really is thought provocative and can be related in many ways to ones own life. I think for that reason it would be a great book for a book club. Now, I do have to say the book was depressing a little, and :::Spoiler Alert::: I was disappointed that Hazel never got to find out what happens to the mom in her favorite book.

There's a great deal to like about this book, and it can be both entertaining and achingly real. Sometimes, though, the heart-tugging escalates into moments of full-fledged melodrama. Sure, you could argue that the humor, insight, and oh-so-clever dialogue keep it balanced, but it's hard not to see certain plot and character choices as anything short of manipulative. This probably sounds as if I liked the book less than I did, and that isn't my intent. I enjoy most of Green's work, and this is an achievement. I just can't gasp in awe as so many are doing.

audiobook note: Kate Rudd settles into a wonderful narration, deftly balancing the winks with the weightiness.

Oh. My. Goodness. Just read it.
Raw, emotional, (don't read it without tissues nearby unless you're willing to sacrifice your shirt), tragic, and yet funny at times. So well-written. Wow.
