I watched the film before I read this book, and in a rare occurrence I think it actually helped me enjoy it more! Luther as a character veers a few times into unlikeable territory, but picturing him as Tim Allen did a lot to make him more sympathetic.

I absolutely love the farce that's rife throughout the story; particularly the way a number of chapters are punctuated by an ever increasing choir standing vigil outside the Kranks' front door every evening. It was also fun to get more of an insight into what the characters actually think of Luther's decision to skip Christmas, which is harder to gauge in the film.

But I also loved the kindness you can see at the end, although even in his most generous moment Luther is still a crochety Scrooge-like character. I almost prefer him that way; it wouldn't feel right to have him completely about-face right at the end. But ultimately this is a fun, sweet and occasionally laugh-out-loud Christmas story about the ridiculousness that can take over the festive season.
