This book is a lovely piece of historical/Gothic/ horror fiction. It has beautiful writing, imagery and wonderful atmosphere. It is definitely one of the best books about possession I've read thus far, and I enjoyed the demonic, religious and mental illness elements of the story.

Excellent read, well written, though fighting scenes were very short; I found this story enchanting and well researched.

this book in my mind is actually a 3.5. it is a through and through Gothic novel and it's influences from French Gothic literature and clear parallels to "Frankenstein". as an avid Gothic reader, this was definitely one to add to the collection. However a few things that frustrated me:
- sometimes it felt like the tensing was off. I think the majority of the book wasn't past tense but sometimes it seemed to change. maybe that was just me. it also seemed that when referring to Bazile especially, he kept changing how he viewed him which, if the book wasin past tense I don't think it should have changed as much.
- the other thing it did was drag. books where they overdo the problems frustrate me and this book did that. it seemed that the climactic point of this novel just seemed frustratingly exaggerated and it could have ended a lot quicker than it did. that's just my opinion.

the thing that I absolutely loved about this book was the imagery. the vivid descriptions of the scene were amazing no matter whether it was Hell or the garden at Du Bris' and I really appreciated that the scene had so much detail.

Overall, this is definitely one for Gothic readers and a good introductory book into the Gothic genre.

I didn't know what to expect from The Forbidden as I had never read any book written by F. R. Tallis. But The Forbidden grabbed my attention from the very first chapter. I was particularly impressed by the setting. While I was reading the book (and I think the black-and-white cover is very suitable and complementary) I could clearly picture the protagonists in the French Antilles or in France dressed up following the end-of-19th-century styles. Even though I'm usually not a fan of 1st person narratives, Tallis did a great job in creating a brilliant atmosphere.
