I think the information in it is very important knowledge, particularly about neoliberalism and U.S. imperialism, but sometimes leans on a gossipy tabloid-style description of the explicit content which undercuts the seriousness of the crimes and violence. The reviews quoted on the book's exterior and interior are unnerving and disturbing, especially once you start reading it and learn what happened, but if you can prepare yourself for that it is a very good full description of the era. Also, very anti‐Castro without any explanation why.
Moderate: Alcoholism, Cursing, Death, Drug use, Eating disorder, Homophobia, Infidelity, Mental illness, Misogyny, Sexism, Sexual content, Violence, Kidnapping, and Murder
Minor: Addiction, Alcoholism, Cancer, Child abuse, Death, Drug abuse, Drug use, Eating disorder, Emotional abuse, Gun violence, Homophobia, Infidelity, Mental illness, Misogyny, Racial slurs, Racism, Rape, Sexism, Sexual content, Sexual violence, Slavery, Terminal illness, Torture, Violence, Police brutality, Antisemitism, Trafficking, Kidnapping, Mass/school shootings, Suicide attempt, and Murder
The descriptions are as explicit and salacious as a newspaper would have. Mostly made me feel triggered because of the context surrounding it, not by the writer's description of events, which on the whole are fairly unemotional.
