I don’t even know where to start. I knew I disliked this book halfway through but I forced myself to listen to the rest.

First of all, Shay is laughably dumb and should have sought out therapy as soon as she left the cult. And she had the audacity to be shocked about Laurel’s life as she’s investigating her murder?!?! Shay didn’t speak to her for 8 years…what did she expect.

Following along with the podcast transcripts fell flat. All Shay is doing is telling stories. I felt damn near no connection to any of these characters because of it.

I don’t like this mix of thriller/think piece on feminism, power dynamics, sexual abuse etc. And don’t even get me started on the involvement of politics towards the end ✋🏽. There should have been more research on how cults work too cause this was just unrealistic. The only other book I’ve read that handles dark themes of grooming and abuse very well is  My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell. 

Not sure what the big takeway from this book is. Maybe I’m supposed to hate all men? 🤷🏽‍♀️

This book was like a train wreck… horrific but I couldn’t look away. This book is DARK and full of abuse, misogyny, and trauma turned kink. Definitely a book you need to be prepared for. I found it exhilarating and scary and chaotic and sexy and tense.
