  • Easy read (4 hours)
  • Definitely among the worst books I've read, both character and plot wise. Starting with the extremely unlikeable characters, there were so many issues. Desi was so manipulative, bordering on evil. The fact that she drew out a comprehensive that involved misrepresenting her character is insane.
SpoilerShe orchestrated a car crash to make a boy like her and the author portrayed this as romantic?
Desi also used faux feminism to justify her actions and admitted to using her mother's death to get her way, just more lows among a series of lows. The love interest was annoying and spoiled. His dad was actually a responsible parent, and all he did was complain. He struck me as a privileged, sheltered, rich white boy.
  • There were occasional funny dialogues.

I became a huge Maurene Goo fan when I read The Way You Make Me Feel, so picking up this one was an obvious choice for me. I'm not a K-drama fan, but the premise is one I've read about before, albeit with American rom-coms—just follow the blueprint of your favorite TV or movie and the guy will fall for you!—so it sounded right up my alley. Desi was funny and endearing and had a great relationship with her dad that gave the K-drama scheme more weight than if it was used as a gimmicky plot device.

And yeah, it doesn't get five stars because Desi dropped everything for a guy at a critical point in the story (even though I totally saw it coming). And I get why other reviewers are claiming her antics were over the top, but I felt like that was the point of the book. You're laughing and cringing along with Desi as you encourage her to believe in herself, get the guy, and apologize. Definitely a fun read if you're into K-dramas and snappy rom-coms!

Fun and cozy read--Desi reminds me way too much of myself at her age, though I had less drive--that evokes classic K-dramas.
