The Scarlet Witch has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters. I always thought there was potential for her own series. For all the things she has done in the Marvel universe, this was perhaps her chance to gain redemption and even for readers to get to know her more even those who are new to her and want a chance to learn more of her.
This one fell flat for me. I am not sure what it is. Maybe it is the noir feel as I have never read anything like it or it could be the art. The art just seemed to be nothing more than quick sketches rather than what it should seem like.
Or perhaps I have been out of the Marvel loop altogether. It has been, after all, several years since I actually picked up anything Marvel (except the recent comic of Captain America).
I may continue with the series to see if I can connect once again with Wanda but we shall have to see.

This is a 3.5 stars for me. Scarlet Witch is an odd character, historically, in the Marvel Universe. I see her potential as a character, and I see the potential in this iteration of Scarlet Witch, so I'm rooting for it.
I like how this one starts off with a gritty tone and is framed in a mystery/investigation storyline. I'm wondering if Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange are going to cross-over, since the plots seem similar, since they're both about some external force messing with the fabric of magic. It seemed ballsy, or intentional Marvel marketing towards potential female fans, to frame Scarlet Witch's powers as explicitly "linked to the energy of the earth and womankind--revered by ancient pagan faiths--feared by men."
I personally like Vanesa Del Rey's art, but I could see why others might not, especially if they're accustomed to bright, bubbly Marvel, or Jim Lee scritchy Batman. The line work is loose, and the background coloring is painterly digital (I think). I could also see how some people my have just been jarred by the fact that David Aja is did the cover, and Del Rey's interior art does not look similar.
I think that Scarlet Witch's costume definitely looks a little more modern/less silly, but I don't love it. I think that making her pants and her corset top separate might go a long way in fixing this. With Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange, it's a little hard to take them seriously since they walk around all the time in weird outfits, as opposed to only when they're fighting bad guys who are wearing equally silly costumes. Not only because our society always has to comment on women's clothes, but also because costumes in superhero comics matter, I was glad that this costume was relatively reasonable, and that Del Rey drew Wanda's proportions realistically. It looks like she could actually be a biomechanically sound woman.

This was my first foray into the world of Marvel, a leap I made soley based on the lovely cover art for this issue (I have a soft spot for stylized images using only red, black, and white). The art in the actual issue did not stick to this theme, but was no less beautiful, utilizing a lot of murky black with stark flashes of purples, reds, and greens. I also was pleasantly surprised to find Scarlet's character a bit less of the caped-vigilante I was expecting from my first Marvel comic, and a bit more of an actual old-world occult witch, which is definitely more interesting to me.
This first issue definitely has me hooked for number two, I'm interested to see the direction this series will take.

three at is better than the story. beautiful panels I a splashy arty style. The story didn't quite capture me.

Mostly fantastic art, though sometimes a little careless about the details on faces. A little on the talks side as first issues often are, but nice set up for the character and the mystery of the first arc.
