This book was AWESOME. It’s my first book of Derek and it will not be the last.

I cannot remember reading a book and having so much fun. Do you know the CW’s show Supernatural? Well, this book is just like the show. It’s funny, adventurous, slightly creepy and addictive. In the first few seasons of Supernatural, whenever an episode started, there’s this creepy moment and then boom! A spray of blood and the title card. Demon Road started just like this. The book grips you from page one and you just cannot stop reading. It’s quite a big book (500+ pages) and yet I finished it quickly.

They smiled at each other, and she gave his hand a little squeeze and went to let go, but he held on. His eyes found hers, and they softened, and he leaned it.
“I swear to God,” she said, “do not try to kiss me.”
He faltered. A moment passed, and then he hugged her arm and let it drop. Another moment passed.
“This was so awkward,” said Amber.

Amber Lamont, our main character, can sometimes be a little whiny and stupid. But it didn’t bother be that much. I mean, I would be just like her if I found out my parents are demons and that they want to eat me (literally!). Her whole world is shaken up, she’s freaking out and oh yeah… let’s not forget about those horn she has. The fact that she has her weak moments is totally understandable and I wouldn’t have wanted in any other way. Amber had her brave and badass moments. She’s amazing and I loved reading in her point of view.

But my favorite character of this book might be Milo. The guy with the badass car (a 1970 Dodge Charger that eats people) and a million secrets. I liked him immediately. Through the book, we get to know him a little better, but I wanted more. I would love to have a little prequel about him! He surprised me a lot during the ending and I cannot wait to see how he will be in book two.

“Now just wait, Amber, okay? Yeah, there are times when we’ve butted heads, all three of us, but that’s what makes us a good team. We each contribute. You’re the brain. Milo’s the muscle. Me? I’m the heart.”
“No, you’re not.”
‘Then I’m the soul.”
“You’re not the soul.”
He frowned. “Then what am I? I’ll be anything.”
“You can be the appendix,” said Milo.
“Then I’ll be the appendix!”

Then we have Glenn. Oh Glenn… He was always talking. He just couldn’t shut up. Sometimes you wanted to pinch his cheek because he’s too cute. Sometimes you wanted to slap him in the face. Either way, you still automatically like him. He weirdly fitted with Amer and Milo. He made everything so funny. But… I didn’t think he got enough attention in the end and that made me very sad :(

Character development is very important to me, side characters included. But they were all brilliant. Her parents and their friends were the creepiest and most disgusting bunch ever. I loved it. I even loved Edgar and The Shining Demon. The supernatural creatures were awesome. This book is full of adventure, blood, humor and action. The ending was brilliant! It ended on a sort-of cliffhanger and I’m dying to read book two (March please be here soon)!

Instant silence.
Except for Glenn.
“Ohhh my God! Holy crap! Would you look at my arms? See the goosebumps? What the hell was that? That was creepy! Oh yikes, y’know?

The only negative thing I can say about this book is: it’s not a real thriller. I don’t know about other readers, but to me a thriller is a book that makes me scared and freaked out when I’m alone reading at 11PM. I didn’t got that feeling while reading Demon Road. The last 100 pages were more disgusting than creepy. The fact that it wasn’t a “real thriller”, didn’t changed my opinions about this book. I thought I should mention this, because I originally thought this would be scary as hell.

I would definitely recommend this book to readers who love a good supernatural book. It isn’t focused on a forced and twisted romance, which makes it even better. Pure awesomeness, combined with lots of fights, blood and humor. A perfect October read!

By the way:
I saw this gorgeous Limited Platinum (and SIGNED) edition at Waterstones in Brussels last week! So pretty!

I wasn’t going to read Demon Road by Derek Landy, when I first read about it. It didn’t seem like a book that I wasn’t going to life, it wasn’t something that I normally read. I have only read a couple of books that had a horror elements. However, after reading so many reviews about it, I needed to pick it up.

I haven’t read anything else from Derek Landy so I didn’t have anything to go by. I didn’t know what his writing style was like or how he wrote his characters, but after reading Demon Road I want to read his other works because I love it.

Demon Road follows protagonist Amber on a road trip of a lifetime. And not the road trip that you do after your final year of school, but the road trip that you see in supernatural, that includes killer cars, vampires, and undead serial killers. Teaming up with Milo and Glen, Amber is in for the ride of her life.

“If you can’t stand to be alone with your thoughts, maybe there’s something wrong with your thoughts.”

Landy writing style is easy to read and simple, there is nothing hard about it and even teens on the younger side will be able to read Demon Road. I loved the wit of Demon Road, the dialogue was sharp and hit you right in the chest, and it was different and fun.

I loved the characterisation of Landy characters. They were fun, different and bright.

Amber was an interesting protagonist. She has just found out that she is a demon and can shift into her demon; sometimes not on her own will and now she is on the run because people are trying to kill her. I liked that didn’t get all down on herself for the post part. She has this, sassy attitude that I loved. It was also nice to see that she was worried about killing people, she is this demon and sometimes she can’t control it, she was afraid that she would so something in the demon form that she wouldn’t want to do in her human form.

The very oh-secretive Milo. I adored Milo, it was so serious all the time, but the kind that contrasts Amber’s sassiness. He was there to protect Amber as much as he could. His secret was very cool and so excited to see what comes from it in the next book.

“how easily the hunter can become the prey. All it takes is a new perspective.”

Glen, well let’s just say that I didn’t like him…at all. He was an idiot and annoying and I wanted to slap him around. All I wanted was for Amber and Milo to leave him and not look back. All the flirting with Amber was also truly infuriating.

There is not many books that I read that doesn’t have romance, so it was hard for me to read Demon Road in that concept. Also the book was big, it was over 500 pages and something everything got too much. There were unnecessary scenes and things that happened.

Nevertheless, Demon Road was fasted paced and full of action, there was rarely a page that didn’t have action. I loved all the supernatural creatures. There are things happening left, right and centre. Good things happened and horrific things happened. And so many things happened that I don’t know what side they were on.

The ending, wow, what a way to end the first book in a series. It was fast and quite unexpected. I cannot wait to see what the next book has.

Overall, Demon Road was a fun, sassy and gruesome read. That showed that sometimes the outside of people can be deceiving. However, it also shows that sometimes people can be good and evil all at the same time. I look forward to the next adventure in this road trip of a lifetime.

Action-packed, dark and thrilling are the perfect words to describe Demon Road. Before reading it, I'd only read a little bit of Derek Landy, in the form of one of two Skulduggery Pleasant books, which I read a long, long time ago.

Meet Amber Lamont; a short, plain girl often called ugly by others. I really liked Amber from the start, mainly because unlike most heroines, her flaws go beyond her personality and include her looks.

Milo is also a very intriguing character. At first he is mysterious and powerful, but he soon becomes an important ally, and slowly the mystery of his past is unveiled.

I've read a few books involving Demons, but none anything quite like Demon Road. The 'Shining Demon' is unlike any other Demon character I've met in a book.

I was constantly guessing at the plot, and I was slightly disappointed when I got a lot of it correct, I felt that Amber could be slihgtly over ignorant. However, I am definitely still going to give Demon Road 4.5 Stars.

I wanted to like this book.... I really did.
Perhaps it was too young for me, and if I was five or ten years younger than I might have really enjoyed it. The stories that go off and put an original spin on old-fashioned ghost stories and folklores and superstitions are usually some of my absolute favourite.
But I just couldn't finish this one........
Actually, the only reason I did keep reading it was Milo. Milo was an interesting character who had room for a lot of development.
The rest was just.... meh.
And I can't say that I've read Skulduggery Pleasant, so I had no expectations with this one.
I really didn't understand why Amber was called out for being ugly all the time. Perhaps because (referring to the beginning here) when I've worked with customers the worst I've gotten is people calling me stupid or confusing my gender..... Either way, it felt like Landy was trying to create sympathy, and other than that Amber was just really plain as a character. Admittedly, I did enjoy the descriptions of how she became a red, horned demon, but that was quickly crushed by the fact that it was the 'big solution' to every problem they came across, and Demon Amber seemed to have no flaws and no weaknesses or any kind of struggle.
The novel was based around them travelling through backroads and quiet towns, and it was very much a 'rinse, wash, repeat' kind of flow.
- They arrive at a quiet country town that seems nice
- Town has secrets
- They discover the big bad evil hidden in the town
- Some kind of hell breaks loose
- They defeat/quieten the evil
- Move on to next town.
Though I will say, that despite its repetition, the separate issues in the separate towns were a part that I enjoyed. The vampire aspect was creepy (I do miss the old-school vampires) and the attention to detail to each separate situation was compelling.
One thing absolutely killed it for me though. There was one part of this novel that I absolutely could not stand, no matter what.
Glen.
Glen was ANNOYING. His constant chattering made me want to punch the page as a substitute for punching his face. While his situation was suspenseful at first, it was brushed aside with absolutely no regard for said suspense, and did not further the plot in any way. After this of course, his existence did not further the plot in any way. He was useless, and annoying, and either there just to fill in the role of "(lovable) idiot". the "trio of weirdos" that makes up all these stories since Harry Potter, or be the "damsel in distress."

All in all, this book was a disappointment.
