I received this through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Bernice used to be obsessed with princesses when she was younger. However, as she grew up, she also grew out of this phase. Now, she is a hard-core skater in need of a serious whole person make over. When a new girl, Odelia, moves next-door, who claims to be a real princess, Bernice becomes Odelia’s neighbors pet project. Together, these quirky girls change/better the things about Bernice, so that she can land her skate park crush. The two learn a lot about themselves and each other throughout this process.

This book had some positive lessons, though I found the plot hard to believe.

This book had great representation. Bernice had to volunteer at a summer camp for kids with Down syndrome. She didn’t know how to treat them, and she got in trouble for her behaviour when she yelled at a boy, telling him to act normal. She learned how to treat people with disabilities and to be patient when someone acts in a way that you aren’t expecting.

Odelia seemed like she was right out of a fairy tale. She didn’t know how to behave in the real world. Her home life and family were a mystery throughout most of the story. She has a whole staff of people that we hear about but never see. I wish she was more of a realistic character, because her presence made it seem like there were some fantasy aspects of the story, but there weren’t any.

Unfortunately the mix of the fairytale and the real world didn’t work for me in this story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher on NetGalley.

over to my ten year old daughter for this one....

I loved Beauty and Bernice SOOOOOO much! The book is about a girl called Bernice who loves skateboarding. Her life is going great until annoying pink 'princess' Odelia moves in across the road. At first, Bernice pays no attention to her - she grew out of princesses years ago. But there's more to Odelia than meets the eye.....

I loved this book because I, like Bernice, love skateboarding. I found this book hilarious in some parts, but moving and gripping in others. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves skateboarding, princesses and mysteries that leave you on the edge of your seat. I rate this book a definite five stars.
