The Wrong Mr. Darcy // by Evelyn Lozada and Holly Lorincz

I really, really wanted to like this. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Jane Austen novel and I have heard so many people talk about reading retellings of it that I jumped at the chance for it when I saw this book. The premise was very promising: a multi-cultural woman trying to make her way in a male-dominated profession. I love a good underdog story, especially when it comes to women breaking through in a field that is so set against them. But this book just tried way too hard in the wrong places and not enough in the right ones. The writing was stilted and awkward (I was really thrown off whenever we would read someone's thoughts and then all of a sudden they were referred to as "the reporter" or "the basketball player" - so impersonal!). I honestly did not like the chemistry between the main characters either. Their attraction to each other did not seem to come very naturally but rather forced just for the story. As I said though, I enjoy the multi-cultural aspect (though I would've liked more pride there) and I'm glad the character made it out of her adventure successfully.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

There is all kinds of wrong with this book. (Not the writing... but with what happens with the characters in the book.) Lots of secrets and hidden agendas. As far as the romance factor, it's a slow burn, enemies to lovers. (Yet even then, things are a little shaky for the couple in question.) There is a small amount of violence. (Nothing extreme.) There is also a troubling scene or two, where tissues might be needed. There are the good guys and the bad guys, and while some are easily distinguished, some are hiding their true selves, only to be discovered later in the story. The book is centered around an NBA star, and the woman who is chosen to write an article about him. Of course that is just the beginning. While its not really a rom com, it is a fairly lighthearted read, yet at the same time there are serious subject matters within. There is a minimal amount of sexual content. (For the most part it starts with kissing and then kinda fades to black.) It reads easily, with a small exception... when it switches POVs, it just happens. One paragraph it is her POV and the next it is his, without a break. Having said that, I read an ARC and that may change by the time final editing is done and the book goes live. It reads quickly as well.

*I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley.

I finished, but I wish I didn’t😵‍💫

First of all I didn’t even know this was supposed to be a Pride and Prejudice retelling. Never read it so that’s not my concern.

I couldn’t really connect to any of the characters and the wording was slightly off that’s when I realized who the authors were. I wasn’t an avid watcher of Basketball Wives but seriously?? And the other author is a white woman so the credibility was lost on me completely and I really didn’t care for the story after that but I kept reading.

Derek was not a good likeable love interest, there was no love no build up just lust in my opinion.

And then the side plots. The miscarriage, the suicide attempt, the kidnapping and murder like what was that for?? This is a sports romance. Just ugh all round
