I liked the titular short story, and the autobiographical stuff was interesting, but most of the book was nothing special.

This is an enjoyable collection of short stories, some fiction some non-fiction, intended more for an adult audience. I liked the "Hitch-Hiker" the best because of the mutually beneficial relationship the author created between the main characters. "The Boy who talked to Animals" was a heartwarming nature story that had a positive ending. The longest story in the collection was really a story within a story. "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar" was a study in determination and perseverance, plus it had such a redeeming ending. I doubt too many people would have issue with how he used his powers of concentration. "The Swan" was a disturbing story of two terrible bullies and their horrible actions taken out on an innocent boy. I can't recommend that anyone read this painful story. "The Mildenhall Treasure" is a fictionalized true story that was interesting. Finally, "Lucky Break" is a short auto-biography mostly about his beatings at boarding school. "A Piece of Cake" is his war story that was his first paid for piece of writing. Pick and choose what you read from this collection based on the above comments.
