Beautifully heartbreaking tale of an all-too-frequent pattern of injustice.

The book did really well at letting the reader dive into the world of Kiara. Spoilers:

It was heartbreaking to read and her not receiving justice - while not what I would have wanted - was what made sense for the book. The police force being prosecuted would have made it feel like a fairytale ending to the story.

Dark, gritty and real, Mottley captures the reality of the 2015 Oakland police department sex explotation scandal from the viewpoint of a girl in the middle trying her best to survive. A truly horrific reality but Mottley gives a voice to the survivors through her fictional character of Kiara.
