Another random library CD we listened to in the car. The girls liked it. I like that they like it and get exposed to important people and places and events in history around the world. It’s not great literature but I do think it’s a good use of our driving time.

Charleston’s been wanting me to read every one of the books he finishes. I’m not ready to commit to that (he’s averaging a chapter book a day!), but agreed to occasionally read some he deems favorites, and this one made that list. Annie and Jack are on another mission: this time they travel to Washington D.C. in 1861, where they are tasked with finding President Lincoln and offering him hope in his quest to unify the nation. The siblings are offered some help from a couple of unexpected friends, as well as a surprise time hop that neither of them saw coming.

I read this on the heels of Moonlight on the Magic Flute and the stories are strikingly similar, leading me to enjoy this less than I might have if I’d spaced the books out. I still had fun with this mission and learned a bit about Lincoln’s youth and his life while in the White House in the 1860s. There are some great lessons about hope, hard work, and kindness, and there is even an impromptu gramma lesson thrown in! I truly appreciate how much Charleston learns from this series he has been inhaling.

My Rating: 4 Stars // Book Format: Print // Charleston’s Rating: 4.5 Stars

Kind of abstract, probably could have focused more on a real story

My family is all about the read alouds these days and these magic treehouse books are pure magic. We read through this one in a few hours on a roadtrip and every time I paused my 7 year old would declare from the backseat...keep reading. Nothing gives me greater joy than those two words. We loved this one.

Another great adventure with Jack, Annie and their magic tree house. This story brings the readers along to "meet" Abraham Lincoln. I like how there are a couple little mysteries such as who are Willie and Tad and later who is Sam?

These books are always a hit with young readers. They combine adventure with facts and a little bit of mystery to create a great story for all who read them.
