(I have yet to find an Adam to snap that on me...)

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I did not want to enjoy this book I thought it was going to be cringey and soppy with lots of second hand embarrassment (I like a well done rom-com but find too many to be an equal measure of far fetched narratives, unlikeable characters and moments that make your toes curl…and not in a good way!) and although some of the plot points and characters were frustrating I have to say I bloody loved this book and did not want to put it down!! I can understand the hype and would say it’s well worth a read.

3.5 stars.

I don't read this genre a lot, so I don't have a strong benchmark. But the 3rd person narration in a rom com felt odd.

The book itself was fine, and I enjoyed the academic setting, the women in STEM subplot, and the side character Malcolm, but thought the romance part felt somewhat stilted and contrived. As usual with me, I really did not like the main female friend (Anh), who generally was annoying and often seemed to derive joy in forcing her friend into awkward situations.

Olive is an awkward character and person, and while I enjoyed reading about her journey through academia, I wasn't her biggest fan. I thought Adam was a far more interesting character to read about and get to know. Though he was meant to standoffish, and might be annoying in life, as a book character, he displayed more depth than Olive was...just okay. I wanted to like her, and truly felt for her in light of the sexism and difficulties she went through. But even by the time I finished the book, I still thought Adam was a far more interesting character than Olive.

Fake dating is my absolute least favourite romance trope. It just feels so fake. When does this ever happen in life!?! But my biggest issue of the trope is the lack of communication and all of the lying required to make fake dating work. It's a bizarre and unrealistic concept. Just SAY what you MEAN. But to force the trope to work, lying is required. I also thought Olive's reason for fake dating was super dumb and made no sense. Adam's supposed reason for agreeing to it made a lot more sense. But hers? Gah.

For a book full of science, there was a surprising lack of chemistry. Also, the sex scene (singular) was very meh.

Anyway. Lots of potential, and yes, I know I'm especially harsh on romance novels (to date I have given exactly 1 romance novel a 5 star rating, congrats Emily Henry), but I do think this book could have been better.

Ich fands echt ein zuckersüßes Buuch. War es an manchen Stellen cheesy? JA, auf jeden Fall....hab ichs trotzdem irgendwie geliebt? Definitiv!

Hypothesis- because this is Star Wars fanfic I will hate it. 😅 Too bad the test results proved that hypothesis to be absolutely false.

And now I read everything she’s written before her book event in a couple weeks.

Also I did in fact read this in one sitting. Which wow. I need to read it again already.
