The 12 hour audiobook could have been 6. This was such a drawn out, anticlimactic read.

This one was rough. It was so wordy and descriptive. It's obvious it was adapted from a screenplay. I just couldn't find the tension or the spookiness. It was not it for me.

Cunning Folk was a little slow to start but the tension in the last third of the book was great. There were some very chilling moments & very creepy imagery. This being a folk horror book, I would have liked more exploration of the lore behind the paganistic elements. I appreciated the blurb at the end describing the creative process of this story.

Cunning Folk takes a turn from the haunted house trope to ingrain folk horror. Those familiar with folklore, especially English folklore will recognize the title as referring to practitioners of healing or magic. The story is, in the author's own words, "very English." The story was compelling and filled with horrific imagery, but the purple prose was a bit too much for me. However, several times throughout reading, I thought to myself, "this would make a fantastic movie!"

The thing I consistently enjoy about Nevill's writing is the way he sets up the atmosphere in his stories. He knows how to slow burn fear and tension. Cunning Folk is probably his best instance of this. I think of it as like an R-rated Money Pit meets an R-rated The Burbs. And it was such a fun premise. And when THAT scene happened....IYKYK...I was agog for a good few minutes. No spoilers, but yeah, it was jarring and kept me hooked. I got through this book in just a few days, I was so engrossed and when it all played out...I was hooked on the ending. It all came together seamlessly and in satisfying way. If you haven't been introduced to Nevill's writing start here! If you have then this is an essential part of the collection.

Have you ever read a book and feel like you should be a thousand pages in and realize you are just not you have barely made a dent in the book? Because I have
