This book wasn't bad. I found myself interested and excited to see what happened next. The outsider (main antagonist) was very interesting, but I found myself wishing that he was scarier, because I felt like the main interaction was a little lack luster. It was interesting and written well and a little oddly paced, but worked for the book.
As always, though, I have many complaints to air.
  1. I keep expecting Stephen King's books to be scary, because they're classified as horror, but this one was a glorified cop show.
  2. It seems that this was a crossover with another one of his books, because he was mentioning names and events I have no clue about. It would have been fine if it was on the side, but with Holly becoming a main character, this crossover became center stage and it was annoying bc I don't know anything about it.
  3. I get that the beginning crime needed to be heinous, to set the scene, but I feel like the graphic description and the choice to SA a small child with a tree branch was unneeded. Child murder within itself, or even with the hint of SA, would cause enough outrage, but it was nasty. Just my opinion, if that matters.

Long and kind of forgettable. But enjoyable to listen to.

TRIGGER WARNING!

In Flint City, Oklahoma, the remains of a brutally murdered, raped, and mutilated child named Frankie Peterson is found. Police detective Ralph Anderson leads the investigation and interviews several witnesses who all saw local little league coach Terry Maitland with the boy before his death. There is also forensic evidence from the crime scene pointing to Maitland's guilt, with his fingerprints and DNA found at the scene and in the van used to abduct Peterson. With all of this evidence, Detective Anderson orders a very public arrest of Maitland in front of a full stadium.

Now of course this is a King novel so nothing is as it seems.

I am still debating if I like King as an author this is the second book of his I read and his books don’t suck me in. It took over 300 pages to really be emersed in the plot because it was dry. Yes the way that the plot was written it seems very obvious okay the guy is a pedophile and a murderer.

Now I give the first 300 pages 1 star. The rest of the book I give 3 stars.

Toward the end the plot picks up and nothing makes sense but pieces fall into place and I am like okay now.

Now without completely giving spoilers I will say that I the characters are lovable and I had a soft spot for all but mostly a private detective we meet late named Holly. The character descriptions aren’t the best so I filled in a lot of blanks but she is definitely the reason I did not DNF this book.

Of course there is some sort of supernatural entity I think that’s just kings still but it wasn’t horror to me it was mostly tacky.

I wouldn’t recommend this book honestly because it took me way to long to read but parts of it were really good but most of it was a no.

A teacher is arrested for the rape and murder of a child. We’re given pages of incontrovertible evidence that the police have the right man, but on the basis of one ambiguous sentence we know straight away that he’s innocent. Clever idea, and well executed for the most part. There’s a slight problem with the end when King just doesn’t know when to shut up. He seems to get a bit emotional about the characters. Other than that, all good. There are themes of courage and cowardice but they’re not really developed or explored and it’s all fast paced and story story story.
