This was a slow starter for me. I had trouble deciphering the authors style (no quotations for dialogue, historical quotes leading in every chapter), but once I got it sorted a bit and understood better what was happening in the world I enjoyed it immensely. The story really hits on the complexity of the war, the brutal and violent decisions people were forced to make to survive and didn’t shy away from the atrocities committed by all. The book is saved from being depressing by the smart, witty, and hilarious comments of the main character. I would definitely recommend this one to the right person.

I don't know if this was just the version I was reading but it didn't use quotation marks for dialogue??? Very hard to read and quite annoying. In addition to this, the characters are not really compelling and the relationship between the leads is uncomfortable at best. The only good part of this was the work the author did to place this story within the historical and social context of the time. Honestly, she probably should have just written a non-fiction history and called it a day.
