A friend that I respect gave this book to me and I thought I was expected to return it, so I put it at the top of my to read pile. This is not something I would typically grab--- a 90s true crime novel, but I enjoy true crime docs, so why not?
From the start you know the outcome of the book, but how do you get from an intelligent female doctor to a woman who would kill her children? The facts were interesting, the story was well researched, but I found the writing lacking. It was a page turner, but it was also...."I know what happened"....I felt like more time could have been spent on the court proceedings, but I guess that is the part that interested me the most. I still am not sure I understand how this woman could allow her children to die while she stood outside, but I don't think anyone could answer that question.
Read: if you enjoy true crime.
....I will definitely be passing this book to my Snapped obsessed best friend.

Not my favorite Ann Rule, but nonetheless amazing, well-written, and thoroughly researched. The Queen of True Crime, forever and always.

Wow. This was just excellent. The storyline was so well done and the narration was excellent. I’m always intrigued by true stories and I’m late to the Ann Rule fan club. I highly recommend this if you are a devotee of true crime.

Last book on my vacation before I head back to work.

Anne Rule writes solid true crime, but I did raise my eyebrows at how body obsessed she was in this book.  Being overweight seemed as damning to Rule as buying castor seeds.

What happened after the end of the book: The subject is still in prison as of now, but has been trying to overturn her sentence.  The ex husband passed away.  No real info on the surviving daughter, so I hope her anonymity is protected and she's living a life with some peace in it.

Had I read this before the True Crime craze, I probably would have liked it much better but the killer felt obvious even though there was a valiant effort to blame someone else for the crimes. Even when the truth came out, it was hard to determine which version of the story was actually true, as the killer’s account of what happened kept changing. The story itself would make a great podcast though!
