It was a surprisingl  intriguing read. I felt in love with Santiago and I loved hearing his thoughts. It made me feel like I was on the boat with him

Did not expect to be moved so profoundly by a fishing tale.

Okay this may not be the most riveting read in the world but, thanks to Hemingway's ability as a writer, it still leaves you quite breathless as the reader is made to feel every physical struggle and emotional battle that the old man experiences as he fights against his luck, the sea and the townspeople. A metaphor for life if ever there was one and a great introduction to Hemingway's writing if you haven't tried it already.

After several Hemingway short stories and even attempting For Whom the Bell Tolls, I have a feeling this will be the only Hemingway that I like. And like it I did! Being a desert rat, I don't know a bow from a stern, and spent a lot of the book trying to just float along the pages, but by the time we landed on the the shore together, I was one with the old man.

Hemingway wrote a book about an old man with too much pride. He had a goal and I think the message of the book is sometimes we need to continue forward, sometimes we don’t know when we should stop. I think thematically it tackles pride, routine, determination as a downfall, and identity in a simple situation.

Short and touching.
