I actually enjoyed this book a lot and am very excited to continue the series!!!!!
Things I love:
- the history & mythology mix!
- the details !!
- Nicholas Flamel and Dr John Dee, some goooood characters!
- the decision Josh faces at the end

Things I dont love:
- the twins relationship seems almost too good (not enough sibling bickering, etc)
- sometimes the details were TOO much, like a whole chapter dedicated to describing the Yggsdrasil.
- i’m usually big into fantasy, especially when theres a good romance in there! this one is definitely written for a YA audience, not really romantic, so that i why this is a con! I do love it though, despite not being a YA anymore haha!!

I read this book when it was originally published and recalled really enjoying it but never has the chance to return to the series. Having recently purchased the first four in the series (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel) I eagerly dived back in. It didn't disappoint on a second read. Deeply steeped in history and myth, The Alchemyst is all that a young adult fantasy novel should be. I particularly enjoyed how the author weaved real historical events into the tapestry of the characters' back stories.

It was okay, pretty cliché and predictable plot but some interesting characters.

This series had been on my shelves for a few years now. I finally decided now was the time to read them. I really enjoyed this first novel. The set up for the future books was great. We learn about some lore and the history of magic. I also enjoyed the bay area setting.
