3.0

This is labeled a crime novel but the reader is kept in the dark as to what the crime is until 90% through. Scott McAuley is 22 and was primarily raised by his grandmother after his mother's death, and his father's imprisonment for the murder of two Catholics. The story is told through Scott's diary entries and it moves around in time, often delving into past events. As it is told from Scott's point of view, we see that others marginalize him, and see his behavior (mostly not described in detail) as disturbed.
This was 3 1/2 stars for me. I suspect other readers might rate it higher for inventiveness. I went into this expecting a crime novel, and although there are crimes, mostly described in the final pages, it is primarily the portrayal of a disturbed young man.

This is one case in which I would advise readers to read the Amazon/Goodreads blurb as it will help you get the lay of the land before you start.
