I can't really speak for the cultural accuracy of this book, but I do trust the name of Laurence Yep. They have done quite a few children's books I've loved, so I am willing to bet they did their best to get things accurate with the artist.

As for the story itself, it's you're pretty standard re-imagining of Beauty and the Beast. This is more in line with the original telling of the tale, where there's a good bit of peril and treachery for the heroine to overcome.

I'd say that, if you're looking for a book with a bit of cultural education, this isn't a good fit. It doesn't teach all that much, and the culture it shows is long since gone. Stick to books in a more modern era. But it all you want is something a bit different from your standard fairy tale, this would be a nice change.

Definitely not earth-shattering, but could become a great story if the bones were fleshed out. Interesting to see the cultural differences.

A dragon stops a farmer on his way home and demands that one of his seven daughters be his bride. Seven, the kindest daughter, accepts and goes with the dragon to his underwater palace. She sees that he is beautiful on the inside, he turns into a prince, and they are married. On a return visit home, Three is jealous of Seven and hurts her to take her place with the prince and his riches. He knows something is wrong and hunts for Seven until he finds her and the old lady keeping her. He brings them both home.

I like the differences in this tale compared to the others. It was interesting that the main story was the same, but the prince transformed, and they got married before most of the rest of the plot from the others. There wasn’t as much textual detail, but the book was still well written, and the wide spreads of images were nice to look at. The copyright page said this is a “Southern Chinese version of a traditional Chinese tale,” so I wonder how different the original tale is.

I thought that The Dragon Prince was pretty cute, not necessarily the most classic tale, but still fun. It also had great illustrations.

A different retelling that I enjoyed, but I wish some more time had been taken with transitions. Sometimes I feel events move too quickly. Illustrations have a blend of fantasy and realism, bringing you quickly into the world of the story.

A unique Beauty and the Beast tale from China! This worked well with my Second Grade Unit on Fairy Tales.
