This book just didn't really impress me because a lot of it seemed sort of trivial. It is possible that his discussion of causality was novel and powerful when it was written (though I have my doubts about that, because I feel like i have read philosophers who addressed the questions earlier), but here it just seems like he's putting forward some facts. It was a "definition book" in the sense that he described something, gave it a one word definition, and moved on.

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but still found this somewhat interesting, even as a casual reader of philosophy.

despite disagreeing with it in its fundamental essence, especially concerning the foundation of religion (it's not faith), the epistemic state of custom (he's not consistent here), the analysis of free will (obviously false, read pride and prejudice), and the assessment of skepticism (people acting contrary to their beliefs doesnt mean the beliefs are wrong), hume can provide us with good reasons for hope (if one thing does not necessarily follow the other, we will not be determined in our current state) and an appropriate humility, slashing through many bad arguments and being careful to not claim to know what we do not.

Hume seems like one of the laziest of philosophers. I'm specifically disappointed that his ideas seem so damn lazy. We can't know the cause of an effect because we are not experiencing it. Yet, if he thought to be scientific and empirical about it, he could have found the cause and realized that in all likelihood we were experiencing this entire time (we just didn't have the words to describe it yet). I now remember why philosophy irritates the shit out of me.
