All the lovers in the night is a contemporary Japanese novel that follows the life of recluse Fuyuko Irie as she lives her life as a freelance proofreader. Mieko Kawakami does a wonderful job detailing the life, situations and inner thoughts of a shy woman who is often judged and deemed less than for her lack of socialisation.

I did enjoy reading the book as I did feel myself connect with the character about certain things, but what made me turn away from the book was the main characters dependence on alcohol to maintain a certain standard of socialisation. I’m probably not the only one to say that alcohol does add a level of confidence for us shy individuals but to the level that the main character bordered on alcoholism. It made me uncomfortable. In a way i guess the novel itself was trying to make you uncomfortable in order to gain a better understanding of Irie and why she does it. Overall, I did enjoy the book but would give it a more average rating.
