A fantastically spare, hard-boiled novel. Parker gets robbed after robbing a college football game; Parker goes for revenge. The plot isn't complicated in the least, but Parker's a magnetic character, and seeing him work is a joy. Just excellent.

Structurally, it has some similarities with the previous volume ([b:The Jugger|826935|The Jugger (Parker, #6)|Richard Stark|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1283736590l/826935._SX50_.jpg|3827]), but I liked it better, mostly because it starts with a great heist and then spends most of the book on the consequences of what went wrong. It's very good at showing Parker's self-assuredness (almost hubris) at dealing with law enforcement, and the ending goes where a Parker novel should.

To steal someone else's review, these Parker books have no right to be this good. They should be trash but Westlake/Stark may not be Hemingway but he knows how to write dirty, brutal noir that never pretends to be anything else.

This might be the best Parker yet.

My only complaint is that every female character in all seven books has either been a filthy sex-crazed whore, a stupid whore or a sneaky, scheming, untrustworthy whore. Are you sensing a theme here? It'd be nice to have a female show up one day who wasn't a whore.

What I consider a dime store novel and it’s my favorite of the 7 I’ve listened to so far. A cash heist by 7 criminals goes well. They wait in town for 3 days, all in separate spots, waiting for the heat to cool down. Then mayhem ensues, people are shot, people are arrested and Parker does what Parker does. Lots of fun!

3.5 stars. Good one. Probably one of my favorites yet. Enjoyable story for this one.

It was such a sweet job -- "one of the sweetest pieces of work he'd ever been a part of." What was it? Robbing a football stadium, that's all.

Parker was holding onto the money for a week before the split until the heat cooled off. It had been a quiet three days. Then Parker left a girl's apartment for some cigarettes and beer for 10 minutes. When he got back, the girl's chest, the headboard and the wall was pierced by a sword (yep) -- and all the money is gone.

Not only is this the seventh book in the series, but the money was to be split seven ways. Will the money be found so there will be a split? And who will still be around? Nutty beginning, but a good story!
