I'm not sure whether this is a 3 or 4 star book.
The thing pushing me towards giving it 4 stars is the relationship between the gods, mortals and immortals, and the way each group is portrayed. Their ties are complex and messy, and it makes for an interesting dynamic.
Counting against it was the fact that some parts of the book didn't capture my interest nearly as much. A large part of the problem was that some characters had been the focus of the first book, so I was already familiar with them, and they were already deeply embedded in the plot. Others were new, and hadn't yet gotten properly involved in the plot. Their sections felt like slow interruptions, which in turn made me less likely to grow attached to those characters. Since there were characters who'd had similar treatment in the first book, but were no longer treated with the same attention, I was also less inclined to get attached to new characters knowing they might drop out of the story having had a small impact on the overall plot.
I was able to speed through this book quickly, in spite of it's 600+ page count, because it's not too dense and it's easy to get caught up in fast-paced events.

I like Canavan's writings, It keeps you intrigued at all time. The Story is easy to follow even tho she switches between different characters often. It keeps the pace of the book always flowing.

CW: short mention of grooming. Potential grooming between a figure of authority and a main character. Depending on how you might view the interaction.
Mention of prostitution.
Endemic virus.
Kidnapping and slavery.
…
I actually enjoyed learning more about the pentadrians, although I wasn’t interested in them at the beginning. I’m highly suspicious of the 5 gods and really like Mirars character once he accepted Leiard. I really like Emmerahl.
I couldn’t put the book down.
