I want, very badly, to love everything that Gaiman writes, but somehow it doesn’t always work out. This is one of those times. Thankfully infrequent times.

I get the feeling this is not really about Poe, but about Gaiman. The story, kind of hidden in a gothic tale, is of a writer writing non-fiction and what he considers classic literature. He isn’t happy doing so and it takes a raven giving him permission for him to break these writing shackles. We are left with the impression that he goes on to write wonderful fantasy.

Gaiman himself was a reporter to begin with and it took a while for him to allow himself to write fiction, much less the fantasy he is known for. I for one am thrilled he did so. Even with the occasionally miss, he hits it out of the park so often that I can forgive a few stinkers.

It’s not just the story that I found clumsy in this little volume, but also the lettering and especially the illustrations. I did not care for them at all! I also think printing this in hardcover is giving it entirely too much credit, but who am I to say?

Not really that interesting or entertaining. Did not like the art style either. I don't think I really understood the point of this story, or if I did, it wasn't really worth it.

Wasn’t this a funny little story. I loved the artwork and there were several moments where I laughed out loud. Definitely read the back blurb so you know what’s happening. I’m wading into the waters of Neil Gaiman graphic novels and the water is warm.

Read this in a dark wood.

Being an adaptation of a Gaiman short story--which I haven't read--I can understand some of the criticisms about the end result of this adaptation. It seems like the switch from prose o graphic format could have been a tricky one, and the end result does feel like something might have been lost in translation.

However, I still ended up enjoying this. First of all, points for the title, which is really the reason I picked this up in the first place. But beyond that, Gaiman's characteristically intelligent, self-aware gothic tale plays with the tropes of the style with humor and intrigue. It's a funny re-imagining of the subject matter right through to the final reversal.

It's a comic that will be of more interest to readers familiar with gothic literature such as Gaiman is playing with, but it succeeds on a number of levels despite its imperfections and is amusingly entertaining overall.

Eh... The art is nice enough, but it's only about 38 pages of story for $18 bucks, and the underlying conceit of the Gaiman story is far too light for a big ol' hardcover display. I'm starting to think the Dark Horse folks either aren't picking good enough stories or they've run out.

I really enjoyed the short story but this adaptation was lost on me. The illustrations were hard to decipher at times, somewhat due to the artist and somewhat due to my lack of ability to notice potentially fine details.
