An essential read.

Listening to Bri read her memoir was incredibly powerful. Not only did she have an important message and experience to share, her writing style is truly compelling. At times crass and plain, at other times vivid and hauntingly beautiful.

Have a box of tissues handy, maybe two. You’ll cry and cry, get angry, and then get to work.

I had to take this one a little bit slowly because of its (triggering) content.

It was a fascinating insight into Bri Lee’s time as a young judge’s associate fresh out of uni and the process of being a complainant in the same system itself a few years later. It is shameful and disheartening how the legal system fails survivors over and over with very few guilty verdicts, unless the accused is not white. Usually class and race elements are overlooked in how it affects sentencing and how a jury might deliver a verdict, but this book acknowledges those well, especially in some of the cases where an Indigenous man is on trial and is found guilty compared to the many white men who are found not guilty. I can’t imagine how damning it must be for women to go through the legal process and only just retraumatise themselves in the process only to see no justice in the end.

I also enjoyed that this was a memoir rather than a theoretical book with personal anecdotes weaved in.

This book deals with heavy themes, sexual assault and rape mainly. If you read it, please read with great care.

Otherwise, this is a book that you should definitely read at least once in your life.

An education. I’ve never felt more naive about my own country. Never been so angry at out governmental systems and law processes. The outright sexism and racism from real juries, everyday people of mix genders. Heartbroken, angry, bewildered, shaken. All of it. I felt all of it.

This book should be in all high schools. And if its to much for "young Adults" at the very least it should be required when studying law. An insight deeper than just what textbooks can teach you.

The only negative aside from lots of tears, this book is very much all about Bri - quite self conscious and obsessed. Given the context of the book it does make sense. But I did find it quite distracting.
