This book is gut-wrenching. It is a very intimate look at masculinity and the hypocrisy behind blind male violence, especially when it is directed at the queer community, and extra-especially when it is perpetrated by people who refuse to admit themselves to that very community.

It is extraordinarily raw, and not very many good things happen at all. I think that's the point. It's a look into a sad world, a real world, where the youngest among us are as corrupted as the oldest. It's tragic, and it's a wonderful read.

There are a lot of themes you could get into in this book, as many have said. The major one is the discussion of violence, who it is applied to, who it is applied by, and what changes it actually brings about. The smell of a rotting home, the slick feeling of a bloodied body, and the utter ambivalence of the outside world. The snap of a camera lens or of vertebrae.

It lost a star for me due to pacing; it read a bit like McCarthy's long, rich sentences, but I found it a bit harder to actually digest. Perhaps this was due to translation, so I can't be too harsh there. I still enjoyed it tremendously once my head got into gear, and I think it's an important lesson to learn for anyone who is surrounded by hateful people: the hate is usually projection, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous.

A strong beginning and ending; gets lost in the middle.

Horrific things written beautifully

But ultimately not my cup of tea.

I love horrible people doing horrible things, but this collection of stories isn't necessarily that. These aren't practiced villains, driven by their own insecurities. These children - and they are all children - are victims of their situation. Their parents didn't have any chance, thus they pushing their poor fates onto the next generation. There's no hope. No future. Just time and empty bellies to fill. Is it no wonder that each character did the things they did? If the moral high ground gets you the same outcome as vice, which is nothing, then the reader can't be surprise when the characters chose vice.

The writing is detailed and grotesque. If you need trigger warnings, this is not your book.
