I absolutely loved this!! I love the concept and the plot. The characters are adorable and diverse in personalities. (This book was so SAAADDDD dude.)
I was a little lost in some of the plot points. Some things just didn’t seem fully explained for the reader.
Overall, I hope there’s a #2! I want to see what happens with the new Immortal and Christopher.

Narnia vibes in the best possible way! Other than the
Hedwig
moment, I was all in and can't wait for the next installment.

Christopher ends up in the Archipelago with Mal, a mysterious girl who can fly. Christopher is introduced to all kinds of 'mythical' creatures as they try to save the world.

Expect to cry!

This was a bedtime story with my son. It took far too long to read in 15-min increments.

I was desperate to find out what happened. I'll be re-reading it to spot all the clues along the way, especially before book 2 is released.

There are some interesting deep themes here about courage and purpose, but they're beautifully laid out.

The book is quick-paced and extremely enjoyable, with lovable characters and plenty of twists and turns. I especially enjoyed the growth of Mal and Christopher during the course of their adventures.

Highly recommended!

A boy discovers a world hidden from our own, full of mythological creatures and a flying girl in peril in this middle grade fantasy. The hype for this is so high! I liked it but didn’t love it, and I’m not sure why…Was it too plot-driven rather than character-focused for me? Was it unexpectedly dark and yet not serious enough for me? Or is my shriveled old heart not fun enough for middle grades anymore? Was it the hype itself? All that to say, this is a case of the reader and not the book I think, so give it a try!

Impossible Creatures is a delightful children’s book that was named 2023 Waterstones Book of the Year for good reasons. It’s an epic fantasy with seamless world building and is chock full of adventure. It’s a tale of good overcoming evil, of friendship, of love and of sacrifice, rich with mythological detail and full of vitally important environmental themes. It’s deeply philosophical but also genuinely funny. It’s a book that will show children that their actions matter, that they can make a difference, and that despite everything there is so much love, joy and wonder to be found in the world . “…the brutality is terrible…the chaos is very great… But..greater than the world’s chaos are it’s miracles”. It’s a perfect antidote, a necessary balance to all that is happening in the world right now. This story captivated me from first page to last; phrases like “instant classic” or “modern classic” are totally justified.
