טום הוא גבר שנראה בשנות ה- 40 לחייו ובעצם הוא כבן 400 ומשהו. הוא מזדקן לאט מאוד. מתישהו במהלך חייו הוא מצטרף לאגודת האלבטרוס שכוללת אנשים שחווים תופעה דומה ונועדה להגן עליהם מפני האנשים הרגילים (שלאורך הדורות מצאו להם מאווים שונים לרדוף אותם - החל במחשבות על כישוף וכלה ברצון לקדם את המדע).
הספר נע בין עברו של טום, הדי מסויט אך המשובץ איזכורי מפורסמיםף לבין ההווה, שבעיניו הוא מסויט לא פחות שבו הוא מרגיש נרדף, מחויב לאגודה שממנה הוא רוצה להשתחרר, רוצה להסתתר וכמה לקשר אנושי ובעיקר מחזיק בחיים בשל שתי הבטחות (לא נכנס אליהן מחשש לספוילרים).

Loved this book at the beginning, grew bored with it halfway through. Read the last line, laughed and said aloud, "you just ruined your whole book." Lamest last line I've read in a while. To be fair, I read an ARC, so perhaps the line will be removed in the final published version.
