Years ago, a young woman was found severely injured in a car crash outside a small town. She had no ID, and no memory. She took the name Hope, and was taken in by the police chief’s family, becoming fast friends with his daughter, Lindsay. Fifteen years later, after moving to a new town, Hope suddenly goes missing (under circumstances that make her look less than innocent), with the only clue being a drop of blood, which turns out to be connected to an old serial killer case several states away. But the police have little interest in the case of a woman with no legal identity who appears to be nothing but a grifter. Lindsay enlists the help of Ellie, an NYPD detective and the daughter of the detective who hunted the serial killer, to find out what happened to Hope. But as more clues turn up, it becomes apparent that Hope had secrets that she kept even from Lindsay.

This story is a female-led mystery with some twists and turns that I did not see coming, and a number of red herrings. It wasn’t as enthralling enough for me to call it a “thriller,” but it was a pretty good mystery.

Representation: LGBTQ characters/characters questioning their sexual orientation

CW: codependent relationship, gaslighting, child sexual abuse and grooming, past drug use

I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was good, although predictable. I figured it out pretty quickly and wasn’t at all surprised by the ending. But it kept my attention, didn’t drag out excessively, and the writing was good.

It has peaked my interest in the Ellie Hatcher series. I will be seeking those books out. Although, I hope I didn’t ruin them by reading this first.

All in all not a bad first entry into this author’s work. I will be reading more of her books.

I have not read the Ellie Hatcher books and thus have a lot of questions.

Overall, I enjoyed the reading experience, but I did not like the plot... I might read the Ellie Hatcher books to see if it makes this one more satisfactory.

This wasn't originally marked as part of a series and I started reading it, and now I'm interested (and annoyed that it's number 6) but I want to finish it so *shruggie emoji*

Update: totally worth it, though I might go back and read the rest of the series now just for the hell of it.

I loved this book for a couple reasons. First off, it has some fun twists and turns and secondly, some of it takes place in Kansas, so it felt “closer to home.” One thing that I hated was that they pronounced my home town of Olathe wrong! (I listened to this on audiobook format). Otherwise it was an engaging read that left you thinking about it!
