A lyrical ode to cooking and restaurants. Reminds me of The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain.

An interesting character study with beautiful, poetic descriptions of food and the industry of it. Not overly gripping, but a pleasant dip away from the plot driven novels I’ve been reading lately.

scrummy little read! i'm sometimes wary of translated books but this read smoothly. not groundbreaking or anything and doesn't hold a candle to other foodie novels i've read but it was brisk and vivid and very tasty

What I loved about this very short novel was that we get to know this young cook and his coming-of-age through the eyes of a female narrator that is watching him sometimes closely and sometimes only from a distance. We don’t know who she is, maybe a journalist, an aunt, a food critic? Interesting insights into the kitchens of high cuisine restaurants and the verbal and physical violence that young chefs have to endure…

This is an exactly 100 page, tiny little coming of age (kind of) story about a boy who becomes a chef, but not for the esteem, rather for the love of food and the passion to create. It’s told by an unnamed woman who may or may not be in love with him. It’s simple, but elegant and full of terrific descriptions of cooking and the cities he visits and while I have never been that into cooking in this way, it made me care. I read it in one sitting and was so enthralled. Her writing was great.
